Recharge your batteries, forest bathe. This wonderful natural monument – a mighty maple tree – is located in the center of a clearing at an elevation of 1,160 meters, above the Heiligenschwendi rehabilitation clinic in Bern. It dates back to August 4, 1895. You can walk to the power spot, the Gründungsahorn (Foundation Maple), above the road from Goldiwil or Heiligenschwendi, or from the other direction.
Heiligenschwendi's supra-regional reputation stems from the tuberculosis sanatorium opened there in 1895. Its success led to continuous expansion from 1912 onwards. However, until tuberculosis was eradicated, the fear of contagion hampered tourism. From 1960, the Bernese High Altitude Clinic in Heiligenschwendi was transformed into an asthma clinic and rehabilitation center for heart patients. A new building was constructed in 1976.
A beautiful, easy hike up the Winterberg. Part of the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was filmed here in 1969.
