The Pilatus Railway is an absolute must-experience! The journey to Mount Pilatus was simply breathtaking — stunning scenic beauty all along the route. The train itself is a true technological marvel, climbing steep slopes with ease and offering an unforgettable ride. The staff were well-behaved, friendly and very professional, making the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. From the incredible engineering to the mesmerizing views, every moment felt special. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Switzerland — a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
We came with our private guide from Basel. After getting down at Lucene station, we took ferry to reach at Alpnach station to board the train. This 30 minutes journey to Pilatus was just too good. It is the oldest cogwheel train in the world operating since 1889. It reaches maximum gradient of 48%. It is the steepest in the world. The view of meadows, forest, Lucerne Lake and Alps was simply awesome. Our guide made us sit on the right side facing downwards for better view. An advance reservation is highly recommend in peak season.
I visited here last month with my tour group and really enjoyed the ride on the railway up the mountain. Lots to look at and don't forget to look out for the cows with bells around their necks. Really quite unique, and storybook like.
Very nice experience, gorgeous views and a comfortable way up the mountain. Make sure to arrive according to the timetable of the trains leaving so you avoid long waits. Definitely buy tickets in advance as they sell out quick.
We took the cogwheel on our way down from Mt. Pilatus. The views and the experience were breathtaking—truly a reminder of nature's majesty that words and pictures can’t fully capture. The cogwheel departs approximately every 30 minutes, and departure times are posted. Since we visited on a weekday, the ride down wasn’t very crowded.
We bought the tickets online. Thanks to this you save time in ticketing queue. You can go anytime on the day of your ticket, even before and you can go up (if place left on that specific train as those have priority who go at the exact time they booked). Nice ride, great view, can see brave and tired hikers going up/down to the top.
