We booked the Sonnenberg for a three day private event (our daughter's wedding). It's a relaxing place with a spectacular view and good rooms. Christoph was a very energetic and engaging host, and Selena was a delight. Loved the food, which included a good variety of excellent cured meats, cheeses, bread and juices in addition to the mains. I'd have brought home ten pounds of the herring if I'd been able to go to Bern to get it, it was by far the best I've ever had. There are two ways to get there. The walk up the road from town is a bit over a mile and nearly 700 feet elevation gain (which was pretty strenuous for most of our group after being awake for 40 hours traveling after a work day). Alternatively, you can ride the funicular up the hill above town and walk down. I suspect that a good portion of the negative reviews are due to cultural differences. Over the years I've worked for and with a fair number of Germans, Austrians, and Swiss, and in business they tended to have a matter-of-fact directness that could come across as rude to an American. But it isn't. I'm very likely to stay there when I come back for the Inferno Mürren.
The hotel is located about a 30 minute hike up a narrow partially paved road. If you are arriving with luggage, contact Chris, owner of the hotel and for a small fee he will pick you up. It’ll be worth it as you can’t haul a suitcase up …
Our stay here for one night while in Mürren was excellent. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The balcony room was clean and view was the best in town. Dinner was homemade and just what we needed after a long day of backpacking. Breakfast was included with our room and was also good quality.
Came for food at midday, pretty busy, but not much food on offer but soup (with whipped cream?) and pasta
For those willing to make the effort, this place is immensely rewarding. Great food, great views, friendly owner and wonderful friendly and polite staff. Very highly recommended-if you cab hike down from Almendhubel, you can enjoy the stunning forest panoramas and sublimely breathtaking mountains. The fondue is to die for. Honestly if I could afford to I'd live there permanently, but alas, I am not yet a billionaire. Next year, perhaps. :)
This is a lovely hotel to stay. I stayed here for 2 nights with senior family members and children. The staff were very friendly all the time. The service I experienced here is what I call the Swiss standard of service. Views of the lake and the Lucerne city are marvellous from this place. The restaurant is excellent. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Lucerne and want to have a stay away from the city center.
