The most friendly and down to earth experience we have had. We swung by just before closing time and Franz took his time to let us taste the wine and choose the bootle we wanted! We loved the Petite Arvine and enjoyed it at the benches under the grapes. He let us stay overnight at his parking lot in our car. Huge recommendation for simply great and honest wine
By far the best wine I’ve had in Switzerland, absolutely outstanding and very friendly service for our tasting
Review – Salzgeber Wines, St. German Even on your first visit to Salzgeber Wines in St. German, you can tell: Here, true passion is poured into every glass. The small, family-run winery is picturesquely situated on the sunny southern slope of the Lötschberg – the perfect location for wines with character. Winery & Philosophy The winery cultivates around 2 hectares of vineyards and supplements its grape supply by purchasing from local hobby winemakers. I was particularly impressed by their natural, environmentally friendly cultivation methods: Salzgeber adheres to the guidelines of "integrated production" and carries the Vinatura label. Despite modern cellar technology, the family remains true to traditional winemaking – and you can taste it in every bottle. The Wine Selection The selection is very diverse and, at the same time, very authentic. The official wine cellar list includes classic Valais grape varieties such as Fendant, Johannisberg, and Petite Arvine, but also robust reds like Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, and Humagne Rouge. The Syrah AOC VS, which is featured prominently on the winery's website, deserves special praise. These wines demonstrate how the warm terroir of St. German is harnessed to produce fully ripe, expressive red wines. Taste & Quality Salzgeber's wines impress with their clarity and freshness, as well as their depth – varying considerably depending on the variety, and precisely for that reason, exciting: White wines such as Fendant or Johannisberg offer vibrant acidity, elegant fruitiness, and a finely nuanced terroir – ideal as an aperitif or paired with light meals. Red specialties like Pinot Noir or Syrah exhibit a pleasing structure, ripe dark fruit, and well-balanced tannins. Thanks to sustainable viticulture, one can almost sense a certain minerality and connection to the soil in many of the wines – they are not over-extracted, but harmoniously balanced. Visit & Tasting The winery warmly invites visitors to explore its facilities: cellar and vineyard tours are available, and the atmosphere in the Carnotzet (cozy tasting room) is particularly charming. For wine lovers who want to learn more about the craftsmanship behind the bottles, a tasting at Salzgeber is an absolute highlight. Sustainability & Commitment Salzgeber Wines demonstrates a conscious focus on sustainability: Integrated cultivation (IP) and Vinatura certification underscore its commitment to ecological practices. At the same time, production remains manageable, giving the winery a personal touch. Conclusion Salzgeber Wines in St. German is a true insider tip for anyone who appreciates authentic Valais wines with character and quality. The combination of traditional viticulture, a modern cellar, and a nature-oriented philosophy makes the wines exceptionally well-rounded, vibrant, and honest. Whether white, red, or specialty wines – it's well worth discovering the selection and experiencing the full range during a tasting.
